Standards provide a reliable basis for people to share expectations about a product or a service. They can cover a wide range of subjects, such as construction, energy management, health and safety, basketballs, and basketball hoops (BSI, 2020). It helps to increase the reliability and effectiveness of goods and services. They can contain technical specifications or precise criteria designed to be used consistently as a rule, guideline, or definition. When followed, it can foster habits, and if it is a well-crafted habit, it can be beneficial to the user. Standards can foster good system development habits as they allow for consistency in the development quality, reliability, consistency, and safety of products developed that are internationally accepted (BSJ, 2019).

Standards are a good way to ensure good system development. Much like literary writing, if someone is going to understand what the writer is trying to portray then there needs to be a standard writing system so everyone can be on the same page and understand what the writer is depicting. This is the same for system development or programing. Consistency helps when multiple individuals are either trying to maintain, fix, or understand what the developer was trying to portray (Anderson, 2020). It helps the developers to easily understand coding that the programmer used in software or system development. Lastly, it helps individuals understand the system effectively incase changes need to be made so that everyone is on the same page. I hope it does not sound like I am repeated myself, but yes standards are a necessity in system development.

Standards provide a reliable basis for people to share expectations about a product or a service (BSI, 2020). It is a process that companies use to unify processes throughout their organization. However, some disadvantages may occur when an organization standardizes its operations. It is beneficial if standardization for development is not set to improve uniqueness, responsiveness to changes in the market, and creativity for new ideas (Chron, 2020). Lack of responsiveness can work against the firm when a quick response to market conditions is needed. It can also stifle creativity when businesses focus on standardizing procedures that might reject new ideas that contradict long-accepted policies.
